How to make your boiler more efficient

As energy prices are increasing and temperatures are decreasing, you may be worrying about your bills this winter. Our gas engineers have put together this guide, so you can improve your boiler efficiency through winter.

Make sure you have an annual service

As with any expensive, and essential, purchase, you should really look after your boiler. Treat it like your car by booking it in for an annual service to keep it running smoothly and safely. This annual service will make a big difference in the long run, preventing your boiler from seizing up in the winter. It will also help detect any faults that could be wasting energy.

TIP: make sure you look for a Gas Safe registered gas engineer, as these are specifically trained to work on gas products.

Keep your boiler clean

It’s not something we obviously think of, but keeping your boiler dust free can pay dividends in the long run. It will prevent tubes and pipes from getting clogged up, which could hinder performance and increase energy bills.

To stop dust from settling on your boiler you should give the outer casing a once-over every time you clean your house. Don’t, however, try to clean the inside of your boiler yourself, this should be left to a qualified gas engineer.

Bleed your radiators

This easy task can help improve the efficiency of your radiators, it can also help keep your bills low. To see whether your radiators need bleeding fire up your central heating and see if any of the radiators take a particularly long time to fire up, also keep an eye out for cold patches in the radiators. It is fairly easy to bleed radiators so long as you have the right tools.

Top up the pressure

A pressure drop will significantly hinder the performance of your boiler, which can cause your energy bills to increase. Check the gauge on your boiler to see the pressure, it should read around 1.5 bar if its healthy. If you have any questions you can always call our gas engineers to chat through them.
